TVAP Mines Route

Terva Valley Archaeological Park

In Roman times (1st century BC/4th century AD) a new occupation of the upper valley of the River Terva can be identified, orientated towards the intensive exploitation of its mineral resources, especially the auriferous deposits.

The TVAP Interpretation Centre provides additional information on how to follow this route.

In the vast complex of ancient mining in the upper valley of the River Terva, the Roman mining settlements of Batocas and Carregal and the extraction areas of Batocas, Limarinho, Poço das Freitas and Brejo stand out. The landscape is profusely cut out by trenches of varying size, between which pyramids and residual granite needles and ponds can be seen, and where a climactic vegetation cover has developed, dominated by oak forests.
