Hillfort of Carvalhelhos

Boticas

Located near the village of Carvalhelhos at an altitude of 860 metres, the hillfort of Carvalhelhos stands on a small hill on a spur, on the right bank of a small tributary of the River Beça, overlooking the Caldas de Carvalhelhos springs.

The Hillfort of CARVALHELHOS is the most visited Iron Age settlement in BOTICAS.

The Iron Age settlement has an imposing defence system, made up of two lines of walls with internal access ramps and gates opening into them, preceded by two large moats and a well-preserved field of cut stones. The interior platforms still contain the remains of circular and rectangular buildings.

It has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1951.
