Built in the second half of the 17th century, the Church of Misericórdia de Chaves is a fine example of Baroque architecture, characterised by its exuberance, theatricality and movement of forms. This is evident in the carved motifs on the granite façade and the profusely decorated gilded altarpiece.
The church's interior is decorated with impressive tiles.

The nave of the church has walls covered in 18th century tiles, attributed to the workshop of the Oliveira Bernardes family, which are impressive for their quality and size. The ceiling is painted with a scene of the Visitation, realised in 1743 by the painter Jerónimo da Rocha Braga.

The church is not open to the public on a regular basis, but only on special dates/occasions.
