The first documentary references to this church appear in the Inquirições Afonsinas of 1259. The Romanesque temple was possibly built in the 12th century on Visigothic foundations.

The temple has a rich variety of styles.
The medieval, Mannerist and late Baroque church, with a longitudinal floor plan, has three naves and five sections. The bell tower, portico and some sculptures remain from the medieval construction.
The interior space retains the original medieval structure, with the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament standing out, attached to the chancel.
