The existence of thermal water springs was one of the reasons for the Romans to establish in Chaves an important stopping point on the route XVII between Braga - Astorga, which later evolved into a full-fledged municipality with the name of Aquae Flaviae in the year 79 - was given the prefix Aquae for being part of the core of the empire's thermal cities.

Excavations carried out as part of the construction of a car park, classified as a National Monument in 2012, have revealed one of the largest and best preserved medicinal baths known in the provinces of Roman Hispania. With an intricate hydraulic system fed by a spring with water at 76ºC, still functional. Find out more here.
