Its construction was commissioned during the reign of King Afonso III, and went through the reigns of King Dinis and King Afonso IV, being completed in 1331, according to an epigraphic inscription at the base of the South Tower. It is made up of four imposing towers with a square base (the highest of which is 27 metres high), interconnected by walls which surround the square of arms, where the medieval cistern is also located.

The castle is Montalegre's major postcard and a must visit in the region.

During the Wars of Restoration, a surrounding wall with moat was built, which has since been partly absorbed by the urban fabric of the town.
