The Castle of Monforte de Rio Livre, located in \u00c1guas Frias, in the municipality of Chaves, has ancient origins, with signs of occupation dating back to the pre-Roman period, but its construction as a fortress dates back to the Middle Ages, possibly the 12th century. It was later rebuilt in 1280, after the destruction caused by the wars with the Kingdom of Le\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The castle played an important role in the disputes between Portugal and Castile, especially during the Fernandine Wars and the crisis of 1383-1385. In the 17th century, it returned to prominence during the Restoration War, when Portugal regained its independence from Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although now in ruins, one can still see the sturdy walls that protected the interior and the keep. The western gate connected the castle to the walled town, where the town hall, parish church and Chapel of Senhora do Prado stood until the 18th century. The town fell into decline at the end of the Middle Ages and was left uninhabited until the end of the 18th century, when the last inhabitants moved to \u00c1guas Frias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
