Located in the Peneda-Ger\u00eas National Park at an altitude of around 1,200 meters, the village of Pit\u00f5es das J\u00fanias is one of the best-known postcards in the municipality of Montalegre. One of the main attractions of Pit\u00f5es das J\u00fanias is the Monastery of Santa Maria das J\u00fanias<\/a>, a 12th-century monastery located about 2 km from the village, which, although in ruins, offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's architecture and religious history. Its remote location, situated in a stony valley next to the Campesinho stream and surrounded by a lush natural landscape, attracts many nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pit\u00f5es das J\u00fanias is also known for its waterfalls, the largest with a drop of around 30 meters (watch video)<\/a>, followed by smaller ones, surrounded by a centenary oak grove and whose lagoons invite you to swim in the summer. Access to the viewpoint is via a trail and walkway of around 500 meters, starting from the parking lot (medium difficulty). Spring is the ideal time to visit, when the temperatures are milder and the water flow tends to be more vigorous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the village that retains the rustic charm of typical Barroso villages, don't miss the new Iberian Wolf Interpretive Center (Portuguese CILI), a project focused on the wild populations of this predator and their relationship with man, located in the middle of the species' area of occurrence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
