The Tresminas Roman Mining Complex, located in the municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar, is one of the most remarkable examples of gold mining carried out by the Roman Empire in the Iberian Peninsula. Dating back to the 1st to 3rd centuries AD, this complex includes a vast set of open-cast shafts, underground galleries and hydraulic systems used to extract gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GOLD EXPLORATION IN THE Tresminas COMPLEX LASTED SENSIBLY 250 YEARS.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The importance of Tresminas lies not only in the scale of human intervention in the landscape, but also in its state of preservation, which allows us to understand Roman mining techniques, such as using the force of water to dismantle rocks (ruina montium<\/em>). The site has been the subject of several archaeological studies and is recognised as a heritage site of high historical and scientific value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complex is currently part of a tourism and heritage enhancement programme, which includes the Tresminas Interpretation Centre<\/a>, walking trails and guided tours, helping to promote knowledge of the region's history and territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
